I 100% agree that they should bring this cheat back! There should be a warning pop-up that says "use at your own risk".
I use TwistedMexi's 250 rentals per save mod with an average of 10 apartments per lot on a 10+ year old save and my game is perfectly fine. It's the people with a boat load of questionable mods and CC who are having corruption problems.
