Smaller column footprint when attached to a fence/wall

Columns often get in the way when I'm trying to place things on a porch where they're present, when it feels like they shouldn't. For example, in the attached images, I can't place a potted plant in the corner because it's next to a column, resulting in the pot being placed out of line of the others.

Of course, a column is a large thing and there's a logical reason it takes up some space, but when integrated into a covered porch, they are hindrances to a pleasing layout. Indeed, I sometimes forgo them despite that looking weird/ugly because they make the space less livable.

My proposal: When columns are attached to a fence or wall, they shouldn't take up any additional space beyond what the fence/wall would take. They would still occupy space when used as freestanding pieces but could also be used in covered porches without making it overly difficult to place other things near them.
