When will they update mermaids to have new abilities and powers?

True, but they did that to ghosts, so there's always a possibility. People have been asking for mermaids and aliens to be updated to current occult level of complexity so hopefully we can see them getting those quality of life eventually.
EA is not in the habit of adding new abilities to existing occults.
