Wants + Traits Improvement Proposal

In The Sims 4, I think the Wants system has a core issue: it is too interaction-specific and not enough intent-based. This creates situations where Sims “want” something in theory, but the game does not accept equivalent or context-appropriate alternatives.

A simple example that highlights the problem is fitness-related Wants, such as “Go for a jog.”

Core Issue: Wants are too rigid

If a Sim rolls a Want to “Go for a jog,” the game typically only recognizes:

  • Jogging (specific interaction)

However, it does not accept clearly equivalent fitness activities such as:

  • Treadmill workout
  • Gym machines/weights
  • Swimming laps
  • Fitness videos / indoor workouts

Even though these all fulfill the same intent (exercise/fitness).

This becomes especially inconsistent when systems like weather or traits are considered

Example Issue: Weather + Wants (Seasons)

With The Sims 4: Seasons installed, Sims can roll a Want like “Go for a jog” during:

  • Freezing temperatures
  • Snowstorms
  • Heavy rain or storms
  • Extremely hot days

In these situations, it often makes more sense for Sims to prefer indoor or alternative fitness options. However, the Want still requires a very specific outdoor interaction, which can feel immersion-breaking.

It can even lead to awkward gameplay where players must travel to other worlds just to satisfy a simple Want.

Proposed Improvement: Intent-Based Wants

Instead of tying Wants to single interactions, Wants could be based on activity categories (intent-based design).

Example: “Workout” Category

Any of the following could satisfy the same Want:

  • Jogging
  • Treadmill workout
  • Gym equipment workouts
  • Swimming
  • Fitness videos/dance workouts

This would allow players to fulfill the intent of the Want rather than a single predefined interaction.

Add “Effort Tiers” for Trait Integration

To make traits more meaningful, fitness activities could be grouped by intensity:

Light Effort (“no sweat” activities)

  • Nature walk/Hiking
  • Light treadmill use (like the no-sweat run)
  • Dance videos (and/or dancing).

✔ Builds fitness slowly
✔ Suitable for Sims who dislike exercise

Moderate Effort

  • Jogging
  • Standard gym workouts
  • Standard fitness video
  • can add a light swim option

✔ Balanced progression
✔ May mildly stress Lazy Sims, but make Active Sims feel good

High Effort

  • Intense training
  • Lap swimming
  • Heavy workouts

✔ Fast fitness gain
✔ Strongly disliked by Lazy Sims, but makes Active Sims feel great

Trait-Based Behavior Differences

Traits like Lazy / Active / Outgoing could influence:

  • Which intensity tiers comfortably fulfill Wants
  • How much satisfaction is gained
  • Preferred environments for completing activities

Example:

  • Active Sims accept all tiers equally
  • Lazy Sims prefer light but slightly annoy moderate options
  • High-effort activities still complete the Want but feel less “natural” for certain traits
  • Outgoing Sims may prefer public/social environments (e.g., gyms or pools), while less outgoing Sims prefer home workouts

Why This Improves Gameplay

This system would:

  • Reduce micromanagement (“must click exact interaction”)
  • Improve immersion (Sims behave more contextually)
  • Make traits more meaningful in day-to-day gameplay
  • Allow weather, mood, and autonomy systems to interact more naturally

This Could Extend Beyond Fitness

This system could also apply to:

  • Social Wants → any friendly interaction
  • Fun Wants → any leisure activity
  • Skill Wants → any method of skill gain

Closing Thought

Right now, Wants often feel like:

“Do this exact interaction because the game specified it.”

This proposal would shift them toward:

“Fulfill this Sim’s intent in a way that fits their personality and current environment.”
