Like seriously, what's the point of them? I can't select them to host a social event or as the main gathering location for my clubs, so what do we do with generic lots?
I've had a couple of family events on generic lots when I didn't want to be bothered with NPC sims randomly showing up.

Before life and death they were good for cemeteries.
Personally, I primarily use them when I don't want NPCs showing up if I'm trying to take cute family photos out and about. I'll toggle the lot to a generic lot before I travel there so I don't get anything weird in the background.
