Why Can't We Learn to Cook All Food Stand Foods?

Seriously, we can learn to cook the San Myshuno, Brindleton Bay, and Selvadorada food stand food, so why not the others? What about the Sulani and Britechester food stands? There's even an odd little detail (which I think might be an oversight) where Sims can get pork adobo (which they can get in San Myshuno) from a Sulani food stand, but they won't learn the recipe when eating pork adobo from this stand. A lot of these foods are also missing from restaurant menus. And another gripe: I've noticed that pretty much all foods you can get from the cafeterias in Britechester are foods that our Sims can make themselves at home. So why can't our Sims cook avocado toast? This is another thing I think might be an oversight. If we do get the ability to learn all food stand foods eventually, maybe there could be a hidden achievement for it? I just think more variety in what our Sims could cook in general would be neat. I'm hoping the Sims Team sees this and considers it.

  • @The_Ratticator Nice paying attention to details! I haven't visited Selvadorada (though I have the pack), nor have I gone to the food stalls in Brindleton Bay. I have, however, found that the recipes from Cats & Dogs did turn up in the menu options when I made restaurants, which is great, especially for a seafood restaurant. 🦐

I just did a bit of research and it does seem that they made it so that when you eat these foods at the food stalls in Brindleton Bay you can cook them (with the proper Homestyle Cooking and Gourmet Cooking skills). I also learned that the Selvador recipes require a high level of the Selvadorian Culture skill to finish and learn. Then there are the 'experimental dishes' (which I believe come with 'Dine Out') that require cooking skill of 5 and to eat the dish to learn - but you also need the chef station to cook them on (a regular stove will not do). Then there's the Baking Skill that comes with 'Get to Work' which unlocks all of the lovely baking recipes, some of which require that you have the herbs/fruits, which is a great reward for those of us that love gardening and cooking skills. And, of course, you know how San Myshuno works. Then there's the Cupcake Factory. Gotta love that one! 🧁

It seems that different packs may or may not have food that can be learned, cooked at home, used in restaurants, etc. With some of the above I can see they varied what I took to learn/make the recipes, but it seems there is a way to do so in some packs. I rather like this, and it sounds like you do also, but you just want there to be a method available. 🤔

For the Sulani recipes, have you tried using the fire pit? You cannot cook those recipes in a regular stove. But sorry, I have no idea on the Avocado toast one. Avocados are from Selvadorian, though. 🥑

  • Yeah, we've always been able to learn the San Myshuno, Brindleton Bay, and Selvadorada food stand recipes, as well as the experimental foods in Dine Out. I just checked the foods that can be made in the BBQ pit. These include fish dinner, kalua pork, pork adobo (which can also be learned in San Myshuno and cooked on a normal stove), tofurkey dinner, and island vegetable feast. Some of these I could see being BBQ pit-exclusive, but others such as BBQ salmon, fish stew, poke bowl, etc, feel like they could easily be made at home. And the Britechester food stall dishes all sound like things that could be made at home (also the avocado toast). Long story short, I find it a little odd how they let us learn food stand foods/experimental foods in earlier packs, but then they stopped letting us.

@The_Ratticator Well, this is the right place to voice your feedback on the issue, no worries, and to look for others with the same interest. 🤞🏻

  • I know this is an older post, but I just wanted to throw out my support for getting to learn these recipes too. I'm an avid cook at home and my sims often are too! I love having them learn new dishes!

@Madokami14 Get ready, I think we'll get some new Off-the-Grid recipes with the Eco Lifestyle EP! Just a warning though-- some of those recipes might include grubs and bugs xD

@Madokami14 Same here its frustrating I can't just use a normal stove for them all or they just can't be learned its kinda bull I wish the sims team makes a update to this.
  • Agreed.

Also, (unless I completely missed it) is there a way to check which recipes one already knows? if not, that should be added too.

And, the recent community survey asked about what age to add stuff for: teaching kids how to cook and have them learn recipes at that age would go hand in hand with things.

@The_Ratticator, I could be wrong but I think the reasoning behind the in ability of the Sulani recipes not  being able to be done at home is the emphasis on the Sulani community. 😇  I think this is done to encourage the player to interact with other residents of Sulani and their culture.  While there is no Sulani culture skill in the same way there is with Selvadoraian culture, the community and events play a big part in the Island Living pack! ❤️

@MeltingPenguins, there isn't a way to check which recipies your Sims know except to click on the fridge, stove, or grill and see that way.  Annoying because when I'm at a festival in San Myshuno, I don't want to waste time eating a dish I already know while missing one I don't know yet! 😞
Maybe there is a Mod that lets you check to see what recipes your Sims know?🤔  I don't play with Mods, so this is just a guess. 😳

I also would like to express my support for this feedback, especially as it pertains to the new food stalls that came with Discover University. I play a lot of Middle Eastern sims, and it would add so much to my game if they could cook recipes like falafel and tabbuleh salad at home. We got a great diversity of ethnic foods with City Living, so why tease us by expanding on this without actually expanding it? I don't think these recipes even appear for restaurants.
