My sim lives in a starter home. When you click on the mailbox, the bills add up to about $500 but when the bills arrive, I have to pay over $1200. I don't know if inventory or items in the house add to the bills still, but my sim barely has any furniture. He only has the collectible items from the last rewards event. Is this adding up correctly?

Also were you on a different lot when the bills came ? What lot type are you playing on ?
I play on console but can add a pic later. The bills did come while I was off the lot, but my notifications also seem delayed so the time of the notification might be off. I'm playing on a regular residential lot in Sulani.
Its is the items in ur inventory I'm build mode, if u have a lot in there it will cost also if u want free rent and the only thing u will pay is a power bill just make it home a rental home, buy the lot move in ur sim and pay nothing but power bill.
Okay, I'll check on this because I don't think my sim has much in their household inventory. I'm playing a rags to riches and I usually sell anything he has or put it out in his house. The sim has only even existed since the blast from the past event. Also, I thought there was a fix announced recently where things in household inventories won't contribute to bills.
There was a issue with bills when you're another lot: [FIXED] Bills are wrong amount if playing another lot when they arrive | EA Forums - 11500624 but it's supposed to be fixed. They were always off when you were on vacation.
The bills should match what you need to pay.
