This used to happen quite a bit. As it is one of those small issues that doesn't recognize saves as it should, I would start from the bottom and work my way up to more advanced steps. You can see the save folder in Documents, which is good. If you see the save folder, it wasn't deleted.
Remove mods first, as it could conflict with an update
Clear the cache, run a repair, and log in
Move the save folder to the desktop. Create a new save folder and transfer data to the new folder.
Uninstall the game - When you reinstall it, move the save folder back to where it belongs.
Save should be pretty simple: C:\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\saves
