EA App and Sims 4

Hello again all,

it’s been a long time since I’ve played sims as life’s just been too busy but with all the exciting things that could be happening for the Sims soon I would like to start playing.

Last time I was here I believe I mentioned that I paused my windows updates and sims updates due to the constant issues that I was only getting temporary fixes for.

now when I go on origin it’s forcing me

to update now to play, which is whatever but I’m wondering whether I should move to the new EA App even though I haven’t been prompted or forced yet. But I have my concerns as when I research on here or twitter I see the insane issues a lot of people are having.

I updated my computer so that’s all good to go now but I know while Origin won’t be supported in the future that I’ll have to make the move anyways but I love the families I have. I made backups of my saves but I see a lot of people are having issues accessing their old saves and their backups won’t work either. I fear losing the insane amount of hard work I put into my Sims 4 families.

I need some advice and if anyone could walk me through the process if they feel I should move over let me know. I was having some slowness issues which were just part of the issues I faced with my game recently and I’m also hearing about  a lot of lag and what not. I also have my concerns bc you’ve all seen me here before and know I have ongoing issues so I already have the fear of not being one of the “lucky” ones who don’t really have issues.

Whether you play the game through Origin or the EA App, you are going to have to update the game before you can play again.  And if you use mods and CC, you'll probably have to make sure you update them as well - the mods especially.  You can try changing your Origin settings to Offline and disable game updates and that might let you play, but I'm not sure how that works exactly.  Tbh, I wouldn't do that since, depending on when you last played, there have been a lot of updates containing bug fixes and changes to the game and there are probably a few kits or packs you might want to add.  If you choose to update, you should probably make a copy of the saves folder and store it on your desktop or elsewhere on your computer before updating the game.

    Hope this helps.

  • @smilelikemiles  The short answer is, there's nothing the EA App does that Origin can't, and the App has plenty of issues that Origin does not.  So there's not reason to switch until you're forced to do so.

However, using the EA App shouldn't affect your saves at all.  The only common problem with loading saves is when the App doesn't load all the required packs, for example when it's not recognizing them or when someone accidentally signs into the wrong account.  It's still a good idea to have backups; I'm just saying there's no good reason you wouldn't be able to play your existing saves once you switch to the App.

There are certainly other cases where saves stop working, but those have to do with system issues or mod-related problems and don't depend on the game launcher you're using.

Thank you for the quick reply as always. I’m torn on what to do. I feel like the EA app won’t ever be perfect but I feel like I saw it had a lot of issues.

I don’t mind still using origin but I also know I’ll eventually have to make the switch anyways.

if I make the switch, should I update my game in origin first before the switch? I play in offline mode and I had updates paused/stopped

  • Thanks! Yeah I had updates paused bc all updates broke my game and it would take days of tweaking to get the game to work just right.

I always save a backup to my desktop. I already put one on an external drive for safe keeping and will also save it to the desktop before I do anything.

I only have one tiny basic mod (playable pets) that I’ve used through every sims 4 update (even when I paused updates I would resume them when a new pack came out and so on) and it never caused me issues so I don’t assume it would now. I do have a decent amount of maxis match custom content. Hopefully not too many of those break.

Do you know when everyone’s gonna have to be switched over from Origin?

    Hi there,

So tonights the night I think I am going to download the EA app. I have not played and do not know how much gameplay I would get in before the switch. I am nervous but I know I will be forced to switch in time anyhow. Can someone please walk me through what to do? I know Origin will uninstall on its own but where do I download this and where do I place my game files when this is complete? Or will they be there already? Is there anything else I should know before getting rid of origin. Do I update my game in Origin first? I am very behind in game updates.

Some of my Sims 4 games were purchased in disc form and then added to Origin with game codes. Will these not appear in the new app? This includes the base game for me as well. Most of my DLC was purchased on origin and bought digitally but those were not.... I've worked so hard on my saves so I fear that I won't be able to access them on the EA app. I am also worried about slowness bc I am used to how origin runs my game but I hope that does not change with this new app.

Another reason for me upgrading to the app is bc origin is soon not going to support new DLC or game updates.

@smilelikemiles  You can download the EA app here:

    https://www.ea.com/ea-app

You don't need to do anything else: the App will recognize your already-installed games and your saves and other user data.  However, I would strongly suggest updating Sims 4 through Origin rather than through the App.  Origin is still more reliable in that regard, and there's no reason to invite trouble.

The App should load exactly the same content as Origin does.  The reports of missing packs I see on this forum are almost always due to someone signing into the wrong account on the App, which is an easy mistake to make but also an easy one to fix.

    thanks! Will try this.

as for updating, should I update in origin before downloading the EA App? Once origin uninstalls I likely won’t reinstall it unless I have issues with the new app. So after updating and then installing the EA APP do I have to have origin for future updates and only update on origin? Not the app?

I only have one account which is the one I’m using right now so I’m hoping that will not be an issue for me then.

So I just did the origin update and tested my game and everything is running so smooth. I’m not sure if I should wait to switch then but idk why we don’t have a definitive date for the switch? I had a message on my origin account weeks ago warning me about the switch over but that message is gone now and I’m not sure when I have to switch? I just fear that my games will have issues with being accessible, I won’t be able to get the game to open at all or it will be laggy and slower then it is right now. I just see a lot of people still having issues that decided to go for it and I’m nervous but idk how much time I have before they are gonna make me switch?

@smilelikemiles  I haven't seen any official announcement about an end date for Origin.  The announcement that the EA App was now a full release (instead of a beta) said that Origin would be sunset, for Windows users at least, by the end of last year, but we're obviously past that now.  So my guess is that whenever enough of the App's issues are worked out, everyone will be forcibly migrated.  But when that will actually happen is anyone's guess.

I personally have both apps installed and use Origin for playing games because it's still better overall.  But the EA App might be perfectly fine for you.

    Ok thanks!

I will consider. I would have both too but I didn’t feel like reinstalling all my packs since I was actually playing last night so I guess I’ll migrate over when I’m ready. I’m going to finish a build at least before I migrate over. I can’t say whether I’ll have issues or not with the app but I guess I’m likely not to. I’ll wait a little bit longer.
