Off the grid cooking

Probably an oversight, my sims living off the grid won't finish cooking a specific recipe (banh mi from city living).  I don't remember if this one is cooked on the stove or not. My sims know the recipes from the japanese and vietnamese stalls and they are all not grayed out on my cook menu, I've only made nigiri though which doesn't use a stove anyway.  I have bought one of the stoves that says works off the grid.  It looks like an old wood burning stove, but the only things I seem to be able to cook on it are from its drop down menu cook with gas, grilled cheese or eggs and toast.  I can't understand why I should be limited to those two recipes only.  Is this the reason why I can't cook these city living recipes as well? They begin the animation to cut up veggies and meat it looks like then just stop.  If i que them to continue the animation repeats and they stop.  I'm kinda really disappointed here, I thought I would be able to cook more than 2 things on an off the grid stove.  Cooking shouldn't require electricity.
