Sentiments, does anyone know how they are suppose to work?

I'm also finding sentiments kind of annoying when playing with children. When my toddler didn't want to have a bath, she got the Hurt sentiment about her mother, then did the same thing when her father tried to take care of her. So now she gets sad any time either parent goes near her, which of course they do all the time, so she's basically permanently sad now, and has been for days. The sentiments seem to be adding to the gameplay overall, but this aspect maybe needs some tweaking.
