Sims pets wont eat!

I have 3 pets in a household and I cannot call any of them to eat nor are they eating on their own. I have moved the food bowls, emptied and refilled and got new ones but no change. I tried to play another household and I cannot call their pet to eat either so its not an issue with my household. When I click on the food bowl the only options I have is "empty" or "put in inventory". I have tried restarting my game and made sure all my mods are up to date. Can anyone help??
