Sims won't complete tasks/disappear on lot

My sims won't do their tasks. The tasks add up and they won't do any of them. Sometimes the sims disappear on the lot with tasks still showing. I try and cancel the tasks but the game won't let me. It shows as an X over the task but it won't cancel. This happens some of the time. I don't play with mods currently.
