The sims 4 gets stuck on loading screen

Product: The Sims 4
Platform:PC
Which language are you playing the game in? Nederlands
How often does the bug occur? Often (50% - 99%)
What is your current game version number? 1.110.265.1030 DX11
What expansions, game packs, and stuff packs do you have installed? Everything except a few kits and stuff packs
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? Get into a loading screen, 99% of the time the game gets stuck there. It mostly happens between changing lots or exiting CAS, but since just now it also freezes when loading a saved game.
What happens when the bug occurs? The game gets stuck on an endless loading screen. I can't get back to my desktop, I can't get to task manager and I can't force-close (or save) the game at all. The only way out is simply pressing the off button of my laptop, so all game time is lost as soon as you hit a loading screen.
What do you expect to see? I expect a game that can load saves and lots without issue
Have you installed any customization with the game, e.g. Custom Content or Mods? Never used.
Did this issue appear after a specific patch or change you made to your system? Yes
Please describe the patch or change you made. I've noticed the issue since the second last update

The game gets stuck on pretty much any loading screen. Until now it only happened 99% of the time when entering a loading screen when travelling or exiting CAS. Just now the game also got stuck on the loading screen simply loading a save, so I can't play at all anymore. I've tried to repair the game, but that didn't help at all. I've seen other people report the issue as well, however most of the suggestions involved CC or mods being the problem and I've never used those. Any other suggestions I came across never helped. Does anyone have any solutions that work for non-CC/mods users? The game has become totally unplayable like this

  • @crinrict Hi,

Not sure if you'll still read this but as I see this bug is still an open issue on your website it might be interesting for you as well.

I figured out a solution that worked for me! I figured out which save was the issue as other saves did not have any problems. Unfortenately this save was exactly the one I was playing with and I didn't want to lose it so I started messing around with it. I had about 5 backups at different points in my game but all backups ran into the same problem. I could enter the save in manage worlds when I would click load game in the main menu instead of resume game. In that save I could enter enter other household and lots without issue. So the problem was either the specific lot I played on, or the specific family or sim I played with. When moving the family to another lot and entering live mode again I didn't have any issues loading the lot anymore, so the problem was the specific lot I played on.

What I did to fix the problem:

    1. Move your family to another lot and check if live mode loads again. Proceed if no problems.

    2. Save the build you made on that intial lot that wouldn't load to the gallery / your library so you won't lose your precious build.

    3. Demolish the lot that wouldn't load.

    4. Move your family back to the now empty lot. Check if live mode works again. Proceed if no problems.

    5. get to build mode from live mode (at least that's how I did it, not sure if it works the same when doing it from manage worlds), go to the gallery and place your build on the lot again.

I checked multiple times and the lot loads again without issues other than maybe being a little slow. However, I managed to keep my save, keep my build and keep all in-game progress 🙂

Not sure if it's a fail-proof solution and if it'll work for everyone running into this problem but it's pretty easy to do and worth the try!

  • HI @inlogtenberg

this also works for non-cc user to find out if it's an issue with the user files.

    Try the following

    • Close the game
    • Rename Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 to Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4_Old
    • Repair the game
    • Start the game. All your content will be gone now as the game created a new folder. All your saves/.. is still in the old folder so not to worry.
    • Start a new save game
    • Check if you still have the error
    • Report back with your results for further steps on how to get your stuff back.

You can now start to copy back things from Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4_Old to the new Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 folder that was created.

First only copy (I suggest to copy so you can go back in case anything goes wrong along the way) the content of the folder Saves (these are your save games). If you are prompted if want to overwrite a save, decide if you want to keep that testing save you just made or not. If not, just overwrite if, if you want to keep it, rename the save to a different number that isn't taken.

Test just your save game with nothing else added back. If that works, you can start copying back the rest. If not, check back.

You will need the following folders

    - Tray (your households and lots you have saved to library)

    - Custom Music (if you added any)
    - Screenshots (if you've taken any)
    - Videos (if you've taken any)
    - ConfigOverride (if you made any although I recommend redoing those)
    - Options(.ini) (although I recommend to just redo your settings in the game)

Now test again. If that still works, you can put back your mods. Put them back in groups and make sure they are still compatible with the game.

All other files are recreated and not needed.

    Hi!

Thanks for your quick response. I just copied all saves to from the old folder to the new folder and restarted the game to check if it works. Unfortunately the game gets stuck on the loading screen again when loading the save. I didn't copy the content of the other folders yet. What to do?

@inlogtenberg OK. so it's the save then. Now we need to figure out, what's causing the issue.

Do you have any LastException files in Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 ?

Best is to delete the ones you have, then trigger the error and check if new ones are created.

If that is the case, please upload them to a new post in this thread.

Please either create a .rar file to upload or copy/paste the content into your post.

Deleting the file won't fix your issue. Uploading the file is meant for troubleshooting.

    Hi,

I don't think I have any LastException file in Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4. At least, I don't see any file with that description in the name or file type. Is there anything else I can do?

I just checked Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4_old and noticed quite a few LastException files. I know this path now isn't used by the game but perhaps it's of any use for troubleshooting? When I restarted the game again it didn't create any LastException files in Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4 after it froze again.

@inlogtenberg Endless loading is a symptom of an issue and has a lot of different causes.

Glad you figured out away to solve yours.
  • I'm having the same issue on xbox one. I've tried several times the past few days. Anybody have any recommendations?

    Thanks!
