Un-corrupt a save?

Is it possible to repair a possibly corrupted savegame?

My problem right now is my save wont load. Household loading causes the game to crash. I can enter cas but leaving it can crash the game. Creating a vanilla household and trying to move into a lot crashes the game. The last time I was able to play I immediently created a seperate save file for that savegame. But now I cant even enter live mode anymore. At the presumed end of the loading process I hear a notification popup sound and then it crashes.

I already removed all CC and mods, repaired the game, removed setting files to have them created fresh... I even went through several backup saves (those .ver0-5 files in the save folder) which all have the same issue.

I create a savegame of my current one at the beginning of the month. The one from end of november works fine. Everything works as expected. But the current december save doesnt work. So worst case scenario I lose three weeks of progress.

I cant do anything with the lastcrash file. Its completely unreadable for me. Which probably means my december save is broken. Is there any chance to save it?

Update:

After some testing I found the oldest automatic backup thats just a few hours older than the initial save. It allowed me to load my favourite household again. It seemed it worked or wasnt corrupted yet. At least I thought so. I made a seperate save in a new slot again just to be sure. I managed to get into live mode. But it crashed when I entered & left cas. Now its crashing when I try to load the household.

  • Zasz_Zerg  Hello!  I'm so sorry you're having trouble with your saves.  Are you still not able to play or did you figure it out?  If you haven't already tried it, I suggest creating a completely new Sims 4 folder.  First, with the game closed, move your entire The Sims 4 folder from Documents > Electronic Arts to your desktop.  This will keep all your current files intact.  Then launch the game, which will generate a new TS4 folder in Documents > Electronic Arts.  Create a new save and see if it also crashes.  Please come back and update if the new save is stable or not.

Still unchanged. I tried that too. After removing, repairing, resetting all on my end the save still continues to crash as described above.

I created a new save. Well, technically I copied a save I created where I removed all lots and households, saved that in a new slot, moved the current house & household into it and everything works fine. So Im pretty confident its the save, not a game folder, settings or mods.

But I lost pretty much all relationships, electronics & stuff isnt upgraded, all inventories are empty ect. All gone. Again. I did that last year when a save had an error nobody was able to help with too.

This really needs some attention from a dev who can look at the save itself.

Zasz_Zerg  Would you be willing to share your save with me?  I haven't done this since the new forums were established but you should be able to send me a DM with your save file attached.  I'm not a dev but I could at least be able to see if it crashes for me too and possibly be able to determine the cause.

EDIT: After a bit of research, I see that if you want to share your save file, you'll need to upload it to a cloud storage service like Google Drive, then share that link.  This is up to you of course but I'm happy to help if I can.

Zasz_Zerg  Thank you for sharing your save with me!  As I mentioned over DM, I was unable to figure out a fix and the only thing I can suggest is uploading your Last Crash file(s) and hopefully a CM can take a look.  I'm really sorry I'm not able to be more help to you. 🙁

Thanks for testing. You did more than everyone else.

I found a forum post where someone used chatgpt and got it to decrypt the encrypted lastcrash file. I only have copilot at the moment but it seems it successfully discovered something:

    categoryid 0x2e08ab48
This category is 100% consistent with a CAS‑related infinite loop / runaway recursion inside the UI / SimInfo / Outfit system.
It is not a GPU crash, not memory, not DX11, not a mod loader issue.

Your stack trace is pages of repeated calls in the same pattern:

    0x2e668b07
    0x2e6692da
    0x2e6686b2
    0x2e6697e5
    0x2e664a27
    0x2e668920
    0x2e669620

This is the classic Sims 4 CAS infinite recursion crash. The game is stuck in a loop trying to evaluate a Sim’s outfit or CAS part.
It never escapes the loop → stack overflows → crash

But even when I remove everything, all mods, all CC, everything, it still crashes.

The provided solutions dont really work but I got a few new options to explore to find out whats causing the issue.

It would really help if the game would name the files it tries to load or cant load. After all its looking for something thats either not there, expected to be there or there & broken. Or its not a CC issue at all.

Zasz_Zerg Oh!  What you found is rather interesting.  It definitely would be great if there was a way to identify which files (perhaps leading to specific households or sims) are broken.  Hopefully the team will see this and investigate a way to do that.  Based on the fact that I was able to play an initial game using only your save in a clean folder without any mods / CC, I'm thinking that something you used must have corrupted the base code for one or more households which is causing the crash.

If you really want to know which household(s) are corrupted, you could test each household.  Move your TS4 folder out and let the game generate a new one, then add only the save you sent to me and save each household one by one to your library.  After that, get another newly generated TS4 folder, launch the game, and create a new save for each household individually to see which one(s) cause the game to crash.  At that point, you could remove the corrupted household(s) from your original save if you want to salvage it.  I know that could be terribly tedious and time-consuming but it might be worth it to keep your save.

Additionally, you might want to check that your mods / CC are fully updated and compatible with the current version of the game.  You could search for the website managed by Scarlet and/or check this forums post:

When I tested folder for folder I used two households. The big one and the conspiracy guy because he has a tiny home and only has a dog. But both crashed. It even crashed when I tried to place a newly created sim into an empty lot.

I keep my mods updated as good as possible. Curseforge, sims 4 mod manager, mod hound, patreon updates... 'sigh'

After battling with copilot to actually narrow it down, because it wastes A LOT time telling me what its not, saying it can identify the file but then saying it cant... its possible I narrowed it down. But I need to wait for the save to sit for abit like a salad. Because for some reason the crashing starts the next day, not instantly.

Copilot mentioned the siminfo might be corrupt. But I found no way to access an individual sim's info in a file. S4studio cant open those files and I dont know any tool that can.

Zasz_Zerg  That bit about the siminfo being corrupt is concerning.  I don't know of a way to edit that either.  I found an older article saying that the siminfo for created sims is different than the premades.  I poked around in the files but didn't find anything useful. 😩

I found an editor called HouseholdTool and managed to isolate sims. But not even a guide how to edit specifics work because what I like to edit cant be edited. The tool doesnt seem to show everything either.

And as predicted, after one day the save is crashing again.
