After a year finally bought today the EP for Horses. Well, I have to admit, I made the right decision to wait and purchase it later, and here are the reasons why: While Horses and Chestnut Ridge i...
I also bought Horse Ranch not too long ago on sale, so I'll add my feedback to this thread as well. Overall, I genuinely like the pack & what it offers - the horses, the mini goats & sheep, the world, & the Build/Buy. However, for an EP, the pack does feel a bit lacking. I am disappointed that:
The household limit was not expanded;
Genetics for foals appears to be limited to a copy of one parent;
There are no unicorns, only a wearable horn;
You can't breed the mini goats or sheep and there is no "kid" or "lamb" life stage for them;
There is no golden mini sheep or "golden fleece;"
There is no special nectar for mermaids or aliens;
There is no mechanical nectar press option;
There are no nectar skill books;
Ranch Hand is not a playable career & the Community Board jobs are just rabbit holes;
You need Cottage Living to harvest milk from the goats & wool from the sheep;
The treats from Cottage Living can't be fed to the new animals;
The vet career from Cats & Dogs was not expanded to include the new animals;
Horseback riding & nectar making can't be chosen as a club activity;
There is no nectar making club perk.
I also wish that the pack included a few more things like:
A mechanical bull;
Gambling (even if it's just a re-skin of Sabacc);
Pool tables;
More items/activities for kids, such as a rocking horse, a stick horse, or the ability to play "cops & robbers" or tag;
A new craft skill such as weaving, basket weaving and/or pottery;
More harvestables such as oranges, wheat, or corn; and
A functional tractor (even if it could only be partially functional).
I agree to everything on this list, and like many others I too wish you could stable your horse externally, or rent out stable place at your own ranch. I also wish you could make money off breeding your prised stallions, and see their offspring running around.
As a historical player, I too love the theme, not so much for the western theme itself, but for its usefulness in historical settings. I love the rough wood, and the old feel, though I too think the saloon doors and rocking horse are missing. A few annoyances of mine:
If a ranch is a residential rental with stables and paddocks being shared spaces, you will still only see the horses of your own household, not all horses on the lot.
You also can't care for farm animals you don't own, even if they are on the same lot (so goats, mini-sheep as well as cows and llamas are constantly complaining about being mistreated when you switch households, even if the owning family takes perfectly good care of them).
I wish the town was less of a setting and more of a town. I don't mind the stores being rabbit holes, but they could have been surrounded by real buildings and lots.
The cave-exploration is boring, takes a lot of time and mostly means staring at a cave entrance. And you don't even have a secret lot after. I really hate those kinds of rabbit holes.
Nectar making is great, but 1) it should have come with MWS, and 2) the fact that you can't buy or sell nectar in stores annoy me to no end.
Hay bales with sleeping and woohoo-options are missing.
I was thinking about buying until I played as a unicorn in sims 3. You can play as the animals in that game. This version of the horse in 4 doesn't have enough gameplay options. They should have added the mechanical bull. I have been to a rodeo in the real. That would have been a fun festival feature. A real western saloon is gonna have a pool table and an ax throwing area...maybe. ☺
