I think to avoid this little problem, is to not stock up on a lot of packs and only stock up on fish in the aquarium and only take them out if they're thirsty and in need of a quick fix.
That is an idea of course, and I usually try to feed them before going out, but some times I forget, and it would be a shame to abort a social arrangement because of thirst, and spend a fortune on the dozen Plasma Janes it would take to quench their thirst. xD
