I think of them as shapeshifters. I used to play some aliens in their disguised form, but currently in my main save the aliens are "coming out", showing their true colourful selves. In my game aliens usually stick to one disguise as it upsets other sims that they can change how they look. They have done a lot to accommodate and it's a huge change. Some are doing it for the children who have a colourful skin, but can't disguise themselves so they wouldn't face as much prejudice.
