Am I the only one that thinks way too much about the scenery in the Sims 4?

Maybe this sounds stupid but every time a new expansion pack got released and I went to play with it I always noticed how detailed the surroundings are and how much work got put in to it while it's just there for the scenery and has no other function. It feels like a fake open world, what it actually is but since I started playing Sims 3 again an open world is exactly what I crave for in the Sims 4. Recently I made my own world in the Sims 3 and I have been missing that and the thought that I will never be able to make my own world/city in the Sims 4 makes me actually sad, haha.
I really hope that it will make a return in the Sims 5.

I just want to include that I'm not trying to bash the Sims 4, it just has it's pros and cons.

Do you guys miss the open world or is there something else that you want to see coming in the Sims 4 (or maybe 5)?

  • I do really miss the open world, I really loved sending my sims out to explore all the different locations. But some of the newer Sims4 worlds are a lot bigger than the base game neighborhoods. BTW, while playing Jungle Adventure I realized that huge areas get loaded. When you start exploring the the jungle, you can flycam around all the jungle lots using the tab camera.
  • Parts of me miss Open World, most of me doesn’t.

For me Open World isn’t always Open. If everything you do in your Sims life is trapped in a bubble containing a couple of streets, and no access to the outside world, that isn’t Open World to me. That’s a closed off world with free roaming.

They should only ever attempt Open World if they can make a “world”.

The Sims 4 allowing me to travel between locations feels far more freeing to me than being stuck in the same bubble unless you go on Vacation or Uni.

The Sims 3 feels more fake to me, as The Sims 4 gives the illusion that we’re in a much bigger world but only have control over a small percentage (just like Sims 1 and 2 always referring to SimCity and that you live in a town just outside, but your Sims work in SimCity etc)
They also play on this by sending your Sims on activities “off map” as well.

The Sims 3 gives you access to a town but basically says that Sims work, live, socialise all within a minutes drive from each other and that feels super isolating and unrealistic, and it feels like I just wanna change scenery all the time.

I would much rather there be a tunnel or something at the edge of the worlds that Sims drive through but fade out when going to work or outside town activities just to help the realism that your Sims don’t just sit there a minutes drive from work and friends etc in the middle of nowhere.

Long story short, Open World in 3, not only became super isolating and unrealistic, but the fake buildings etc just added to the unrealistic side of things.

The Sims 1 & 2 made SimCity the main location (that we never saw) and only gave us access to a small percentage of SimCity in form of a town. So that players could use their imagination when Sims went off map. I used to think there was a huge city where my Sims went to during the day, and then I had my little corner that I controlled.

Sims 3 ruined that because it took away a lot of that aspect and instead replaced it with a super underwhelming, unrealistic and poorly executed concept instead.
  • I don't need open world, I actually love the way the worlds are in Sims 4, except that I do really wish we could edit them, even just a little bit.
  • I don't mind having the world maps it makes managing things a little better than it did in the sims 3. Besides open world for me became more isolated than it did open.

I agree, wish we could edit them.
  • I actually quite like the semi-open neighborhoods of TS4. If you think about it, you're always going to need to have an inaccessible backdrop at some point. I mean, I'm not sure how else it would work, unless your sim is in like a No Man's Sky planet where you can literally walk every inch of the globe, or a Minecraft world where it's continually generated every time you move somewhere new. Even TS3 had far distance backdrops and unroutable areas. It wasn't completely open everywhere. Your sim lived in a finite town that was surrounded with unroutable mountains or oceans. And eventually you would build in all of the limited town space and then you'd be done because there was nowhere new to go unless you started a new save. I agree with @jackjack_k about how that made TS3 feel very isolating. Your sims were born and died in one place and could never really move around unless you ditched the whole town, never to return. I love being able to move my sims between towns.

But I really really really miss world building. Or even simple world EDITING. OMG, this game is killing me with its lack of world editing. I keep running into situations where I just don't have the lot sizes or environments I need for what I want to build and it is SO FRUSTRATING. All the worlds we've gotten are lovely enough, sure, but they're all so specific. If you're not trying to build exactly what they intended for you to build there, you're out of luck.
  • Default TS4 camera mode centered on the ground makes me think we are not meant to see the backdrops at all times, only occasionally.

Which is a shame because some of these worlds really are beautiful, even with their lack of interactivity/customization.

The reason is probably that if we could see more of the scenery in the background instead of the ground, we would see how actually flat (trees) and fake the world really is!

I'm the same. I like how the semi-open neighborhoods are filled with a lot more people and animals, which makes it feel more lively! I wish we could still have bikes and horses cause there is plenty of space to enjoy those with the size of the area's now.
