As best I can recall from the times I've done it with two playable sims, there's only a couple of points that every sim actually has to trigger. Everything else you can have one sim trigger it, and the other sim along for the ride. Technically, you don't need the aspiration to do the Strangerville mystery at all, but I find it helps for certain stages at least.
You will need to pick a "lead" between your two sims at some point, to have as your focal sim during the last scene, but otherwise it's just a matter of doubling up on some activities, only a couple of which end up slightly immersion breaking to have to do them multiple times.
