Cafe autonomy - help us understand how it works?

We just got Get Together and are excited to explore its functions. We took a household of 3 to a cafe. As soon as we arrived, everyone's queue filled up with autonomous "Order food" and "Order drink". We didn't have the option to choose what they ate or drank. We tried canceling the action on one character, and saw that we could click on the barista to order particular foods or drinks, but several autonomous ordering actions came back into the queue so it was hard to figure out what was going on.

Is going to a cafe a very tightly scripted event, where when you walk in, you have to order a food and a drink and then sit down and eat it, and then you are free to do other things?

Or is it even more tightly scripted where the sims just order food and drink over and over and over until you leave?

Or does this have something to do with the hunger need, like if you aren't hungry to begin with then the autonomous orders don't happen?

This seems different from the autonomy in bars. There, sims do order drinks autonomously but not over and over and not in a way that prevents them from doing other things.

I don't mind the tight scripting in restaurants because I understand how it works. And it makes sense to me that you'd go to a restaurant to sit down and order your food and eat your food and pay your bill in that order; also you are free to socialize and get up from your table and sit back down later if you want.

We'd love to be able to play in the cafes a little more freely, like go there on dates and be able to do the date actions, socialize with friends, do homework there, use them as club hangouts, etc. Like you can in the bars and lounges. If that's possible.

We'll continue experimenting, but it would be great if someone here wishes to explain the process for us. Thanks!

  • Other sims will go order coffee and croissants but your sims will do whatever you want them to do. Either order food or coffee if hey are hungry or just sit down and chat. I put computers in a cafe I have in my game so other sims will sometimes sit and use the computer while drinking their coffee. You can select the different foods and drinks after you click on the order food/drink interactions.
  • They are set to order autonomously over and over agian, at least from what i noticed. I am not sure how much their needs play into that, though. Holding club gatherings at cafes was especially awful because they just kept ordering stuff and almost did nothing else. I had to ban eating and drinking!! Actually, soical clubs are bugged in my game and barely work regardless, but that is another story.

But that's the Club mechanic, not the café as such. It's like complaining if you make a workout club and your Sims just keep working out. If you don't want them to order coffee all the time, remove "order coffee" as a required club activity.

Edit: Remember, as long as you don't have "Drink coffee" on the banned activities list Sims will still occasionally drink coffee when their needs get low and you have a club gathering in a café. So as counter productive as it might sound, if you just want your Sims to have a coffee club, just make them be friendly to each other as a mandatory activity and make them meet in a café. Don't put ordering coffee or food on the mandatory activties list.

Oh, it wasnt added in the first place. Sorry for not being clear enough XD That was a spellcasters club so casting spells was the only activity i set, they just gather at the cafe. I expected them to follow that one single activity but they just order stuff and chat. It was a snoozefest, but that is probably because clubs are bugged in my game since they dont cast spells no matter where i set the gathering spot.

The cafes seem to make sims order things on their own, which makes total sense, but it probably happened too often for op's liking. Your comment just gave me an idea that might help op, actually! Use clubs when you are there and prevent them from ordering using club mechanics, then switch back to allowing it when you want them to.
  • Cafes can be crazy. I had to get a mod to tone down sims ordering so much.

Yeah, I find eat/drink as club activities to be way overpowered. Like, I get that it's one of the tasks to eat or whatever but even if you have another activity, or a few, sims tend to gravitate to eating/drinking more often than not.

(Take a breath little simmies. In your cooking and tasting club at least someone could try the cooking part. :unamused:)

I think it'd be better if sims in clubs don't go for a drink/food if their hunger bar is near or full green.
  • thank you @crocobaura @Mareah @Beardedgeek @calaprfy and @HopeyStarr for helping us out.

Good to know we are not the only ones to have this problem, I suppose ;)
What is the mod you use @HopeyStarr ? I so far have not ventured into mods at all, but some of the repetitive actions are disruptive enough to gameplay that I might break down and do it. I wonder if there is some one mod for tuning autonomy differently that might work for this as well as the repetitive cooking-but-not-eating bug

(and maybe even the thing where every time I leave the lot and come back someone is grilling?)

And yes, op does find this suggestion very helpful!

    Thank you
