Cant afford a house?

I haven't experienced that but if I did, I would not hesitate to use cheats to afford a house. Did you use the story creation in CAS? That can give you reduced funds, although I would still expect a lot more than 2k.

The simplest cheat would be freeRealEstate.

You could also use kaching (1k simoleons), motherLode (50k), or the money cheat which allows you to set any amount you want. I think you'll also need testingCheats on if you use the money cheat. You'll probably have to move your Sims into an empty lot before using any of these cheats except freeRealEstate.

The trick I use is to move a sim or sims into a lot, go to neighborhood view, move the sims into the NPC bin, then go into build mode and build their house. When you build or add on to the houses of NPC sims, it doesn't get charged against their funds. When you are done, you can move your sim back into the played sim bin by entering their new home in live mode.

You can also use “rosebud” for 1000 simoleans.

Nope - but I always use free realestate cheat

One thing I have done to get a bit more money, but not too much, is to create a Sim and move them into a house. Later on I made another Sim, and moved them in. With the combined amount, I was able to move them into a bigger house. It is a great way to get money without the cheating.
I do use Rosebud, and Motherlode in my other save files. The one I mentioned is one I want to keep cheat free to earn medals.

Yeah, using freerealestate or familyfunds when the game glitches isn't cheating. And I say that as someone who usually only uses the building cheats (just pretend they are building cheats).
