Degree requirements and electives in Discover University

I've got a question about degree requirements in Discover University.

My student Sim is taking his time with his education, so I can experience more of the gameplay attached to Uni life. (I also have Aging off, so he won't be an Elder on his graduation day.)

He is a Language and Literature major at UBrite. He took only one course during each of his first terms, which was always a required course. Then, I had him double up and take an elective course, too. He made an A+ in Cross Stitch EVERYTHING! and picked up some skill.

When I got ready to register him for his next term, I discovered his Cross Stitch course apparently counts for his graduation requirements. It says he needs 8 more courses to graduate, out of his 12-course requirement.

Do any of you know how many courses a Sim must take in their major in order to complete their degree?
  • I believe it is just 12 classes total, so you can get your degree with only 6 core classes + 6 electives if you do 6 terms at 1 + 1 each time. I've never tried it to that extreme, but I have graduated sims doing 4 terms with 2 core + 1 elective in each term.

  • From what I can tell it just counts the credit total and whatever you are able to select goes towards the degree. I've had some where I did a lot of electives and some where I didn't do any and I didn't notice any difference in the game.

I like to pace them 4-4-4 when I want to get a degree as fast as possible. 4-4-2-2 when I want to try a few activities in the last two terms. My last one I intended to explore everything offered in the pack with 3-3-2-2-2 but even that wasn't enough lol. I am about to play this pack again and I will try your strategy of 1 course only to start and then increase later.

If you go back for a second term you will only need to do 8 credits.
  • Thanks for your replies. It looks like it's any 12 courses, which would mean a Sim could take several electives.

@Stormkeep I might do only one course in a term again, so I can have my Sim go out for a team. After that, I'm not sure what I'll try. I play The Sims to relax and unwind, so the thought of taking several classes and having to carefully plan out a schedule seems like more work than I'd care to do right now.

@Elliandre I'm finding that with one course, it's easy to do anything I want. I have time to let my Sim hang out on campus and socialize, join campus organizations, and still have plenty of time to make high grades. I'm thinking a second degree might be fun to do, since it requires fewer credits. DU is a lot of fun!

@MoonlightGraham I really like it too, but I haven't got very far in the clubs. I'm looking forward to just doing 1 class and enjoying the game. I haven't tried a second degree yet, but I think it would be fun to pair related degrees like Art History / Fine Arts. The Research & Debate skill and Study lot trait help them do their homework a bit faster too.
  • My sims have had time to socialize every night and join clubs, etc. even with a 3 course class load each term. As long as you attend classes and take notes, you don't have to do much of anything else outside of the classroom. I always enroll in the term on friday late afternoon and get all the term papers/presentations done by Saturday afternoon....leaving plenty of free time for the rest of the term.

Edit: I should mention, I've only ever gone to university with Sims who entered with at least 3-4 skill levels in their core skills and some Research & Debate skill right as they entered Uni, developed when they were still children/teens. i.e. I haven't taken any sims through university which weren't born in game. The Research & Debate skill in particular helps a lot.
I also always have a few levels of handiness for all my played sims and I upgrade their beds, even when they stay in the dorm. Less sleep needed = more time for other stuff.
  • The 12 total classes (or 8 if you have previous degree credits) can either be a blessing or a curse. In my one save I'm trying to get all the degrees and in the other I'm trying to have a super average sim who likes to chill, but doing only 1 or 2 classes means they get straight A's anyway... so, :| I do wish they would make it harder, like actually attending class with your sim or adding a PhD option.
