I do incorporate diversity into my game. I tend to edit nearly all townies in CAS. I avoid having very many townie elders and I tweak sims so that they aren't all really overweight with a goofy or sleepy walk. I keep some CL townies in the game as-is. I do edit for realism so if there's a sim with a Japanese name but an Indian appearance, I will edit them to pick one.
I do create back stories for my townies and sims who join my rotation. I also add some backgrounds that aren't automatically generated in the game. I do want to keep things consistent with the setting of my rotational game. That setting is a place that has diversity and is welcoming of various people. There are some interracial couples in my rotation of houses. Their children will add to the diversity of the game as it goes on. Part of my seeking of diversity does include my adding various hair colors. I do make sure that there are some redheads and blonds in the mix. Caucasians are part of the diversity in my game. I also have people who are new in town and people who are second generation.
If a sim is playable then I make sure that they are a fully developed character with their own internal motivations and decision-making regardless of what their background is. Everyone of them is a "sim" person, not a stereotype.
Examples? Lucas Munch's wife is half-Chinese. Her mother met her father while traveling in China and then brought her back and raised her as a single mother. (She doesn't really look like her mother and I did keep her as is since she and Lucas matched well together).
Wolfgang Munch was a bachelor when a townie surprised him by announcing she was pregnant. I found this out because I was doing a fashion makeover for that townie when I noticed a message saying she could not be edited because she was pregnant, this was after they had had some fun in the Narwhal Arms). I decided to roll with the surprise. Wolfgang invited the sim to stay with him because she needed somewhere to stay and he felt responsible. They ended up married and they still are. I've said that she is an East African immigrant/refugee who moved to the area as a child. She is also very gifted with languages. She's an international super spy, a role which the game had already assigned her as a townie. There's now a whole plotline about how she is an agent who is tracking Wolfgang (a criminal) to learn more about his organization. The accidental pregnancy was a set-up as part of her cover so that she could live with him and follow activities and those of his colleagues. Their child is his, it's just that he was successfully lured into a trap and does not know it yet. Anyway, his wife is a fully developed character with her own motivations and reasons for being in the game. She's not a stereotype. She's also smart and frankly, outsmarting him.
Those are just examples, but all of my rotation tends to be like that. Diversity will continue to be a part of my game as time goes on. I also have no shame in editing townies. I'm a lot happier when I edit them. My town is full of mostly beautiful or interesting people. I guess that part is slightly unrealistic but I'll go with it. I do think that beauty and being interesting can come from any background.
