Do you align your holidays with real life or have them in a short cycle/do what you want?

Hey, I've been fiddling around with my family trying to do this and that to give them depth. I realized part of the reason I get so bored is because I cheat and never give my Sims any depth. I'm also waiting to celebrate holidays in-game, but for some reason I'd rather wait until the actual holidays. I didn't celebrate Halloween in-game until the day after Halloween so it doesn't always work. I'm thinking of just putting the seasons/holidays on a short or regular cycle so long as I can cycle back to Christmas/New Year at the end of the year. I personal feel like forcing myself to wait could possibly make me get bored faster. What do you think? How do you handle your Holidays?

  • I don't really bother with the holiday system until it involves my mains saves where I've painstakingly recreated all the custom holidays I wanted with a 28-day year. I don't also play 'seasonally' depending upon what the current season it is in RL; I'm far too impatient for that.
  • I like them to always occur during the time of the in-game season where they make sense. It doesn’t matter to me what season it is IRL.

The biggest struggle I’ve had is with timing certain holidays. Because IRL Christmas and NYE are exactly one week apart, so I like that in the game, too. But then I have New Year’s Day on Day 1 of spring, when it’s really not even close to spring yet (only in my dreams in the Northeast US!) Then again, it doesn’t make sense to have the new year start on any day other than the 1st of something. And if I made it the 1st of winter, I couldn’t have Winterfest in winter. So I just deal with spring coming sooner.
  • I don't need my in-game holidays to match the ones in the real world. I can't imagine only allowing my sims to celebrate Fright Fest during the real world month of October. I play too frequently for that, and would, indeed, find it boring. Besides, I like Halloween. I see this as a way to celebrate it almost year round.

I play with two week seasons and long life, and while I don't have a ton of holidays, between the premade ones, the random ones and my own, I can usually count on at least one holiday coming up each play session (though sometimes it's a random one that I delete before it happens)

I did relocate Love Day to be the Friday before the spring Romance Festival with Springfest the day after. (I wish I could designate that whole Weekend as a single holiday with three days to fill the traditions)

  • Although my holidays are mainly all made-up, I do try to align them as close as possible to the perceived months each custom holiday I've made would correspond in with the 28-day year; it could not work in any other setting. I even took the time to move NYE to the end of the 3rd week of winter to accommodate.
  • My Sims celebrate their holidays when I have enough time to play. I play with aging off and all the seasons set at 28 days per season. As a rotational player, this gives me some flexibility. Holidays that fall in certain seasons are celebrated during that season. But holidays in my home are a big deal, and crazy busy. I seldom have the opportunity to play my Sims let alone set up holidays for them to celebrate at the same time I am celebrating IRL. The one exception to this is I do decorate my Sim homes for Christmas even if they happen to be enjoying summer, fall or spring. I know it sounds a bit crazy, but it makes me feel as if they aren't being totally left out of my favorite time of the year. :D
  • I don't usually. My Sims have had Winterfest several times since I got seasons for Christmas last year. However, right now I don't want to see Christmas stuff until after Thanksgiving so I probably will take a break until December when I get close.

But I have played several rounds of all the seasons and holidays and it generally doesn't matter to me how they line up with the real world.
