I had a family in Sims 2 where the mom's last name was Boundy and the dad's was Williams, so I changed their kids' names to Boundy-Williams. I think I either used SimPE or some boolprop cheat though, so I don't know what the limit was (and a quick search didn't tell me either).
I'm recreating the whole family tree in TS4, and am one letter short on their last name. I could of course skip the hyphen in this case, but it looks weird.
