Annoying is an understatement! Have had the problem you describe several times, that and home break-ins (usually by random townie vampires, the premades are courteous so knock first and don't enter unless door is opened). Those game saves have been abandoned with new ones played under the no vampires protocol: no researching them, no talking with them if encountered, no vampire comments of any sort in conversations with normal sims, no anything. Have likewise noticed them frequently on community lots and working at them.
