Does birds/bunnies have a range for gardening?

In Cottage Living it is possible to ask birds and bunnies to help with gardening. But does anyone know if they have a certain range, or can I just place their home anywhere on my lot and they will help with gardening? I tried googling and searching the forums, but I didn't really find an answer..
