Dream Home Decorator Tips?

So far, it seems like I'm doing ok at the new job for my Sim. I've restarted her a couple times though but I think I may be getting the hang of it. However, are there tips and tricks out there that have made it easier for you guys? I'm also trying to have my Sim become famous at the job, if she can be that way. It seems to sort of work so far I think. I am not a decorator or a builder, so sometimes it's a bit harder for me, but I'm trying. So any helpful tips would be well, helpful. lol :)

    My tips:

Go to Map View before going to the gig. If you click on your clients' home and then click on each member, you can find out their likes and dislikes. As others have pointed out, every member of the household (except pets) will judge your gig, so you won't necessarily find out color and decor preferences just by asking.

Use the filters (right side, above furniture). You can filter for decor and color simultaneously.

You can change floor tile in a room and wall covering the same way as when building.

Some people have said you can't put in furniture that your Sim has built with the wood-working table or the fabrication machine. I'm pretty sure you can. If you click on your home inventory when in build mode, you'll have access to what's there. You can also use this to add your clients' furniture to your inventory. If you do that, your budget for the gig will be smaller.

When you talk to your clients, and they give you a "dislike skiing' for example, you can use the 'suggest another color' or 'suggest another decor' (or something like that) interaction. They will then give you a color that they like or don't like, and a decor they like or don't like. You can use this multiple times on multiple sims. If you just found out that Sim A likes yellow, you can go to Sim B and suggest another color. The sim will give you a new answer, and the icon in your gig will change. I did this multiple times with 3 different sims in one household. I found out many dislikes and a few likes, but they were all color and decor related.

If Sim A likes Island decor and hates Cosmolux, and Sim B hates Island Decor and loves Cosmolux ( example), then try mixing items from both styles together. I did this and was able to get a thumbs up from both sims.
  • My sim redecorated two kids' rooms so far. The first one I asked about likes dislikes each household member and got pretty straightforward answers, they liked blue, modern, and some other thing I forgot. Anyway, I redecorated the room with blue and modern furniture mostly and they loved it. The second room I decided to ask just the kid about preferences and she disliked fishing and liked garden decor and painting. As there wasn't much garden decor suitable for a kid's room, I simply redecorated using a garden print wallpaper and furniture from the realm of magic pack and gave them a digital sketch pad as there wasn't room for an easel. They loved it as well. Anyway, I wouldn't call these tips, but I thought I would share. ?

I haven’t played the career yet, but I have been going into sims houses, and noting the type of furniture they have and giving them preferences based on the type of furniture they have, or the type I would rather see them have. I don’t give them dislikes on decor or color often, Most sims I give at least 2-4 decor preference types, I think the more decor preferences they have, the easier they will be pleased. And I try to make the family have a consensus of likes. I write down their preferences.. is that cheating? Lol. I use index cards.
  • I make sure my sim's needs are high. I go ask each member the color, hobby, decor, Simstress, and moodboard questions. I delete/hammer excess items, lights, ect. I try to delete outside rocks, bushes, or walls I don't need if it allows me to. All of this causes more money for the budget. I try to pick pieces according to color and decor for all Sims. I change wall and floor patterns too. I also put in any hobbies they have. If I can't find enough to put in, I just include items they don't have. For example, if there's a kid's room, but I'm doing a living room gig, I put in the living room a toy that's not in the kid's room already.
I always personally show it and select look at this item on all the best stuff and more if I have time.

Great post. I didn't realize it showed likes ect from the map view. I will have to try that.

    Personally, I'm enjoying the pack.

  • If you use testingcheats then you can always go to CAS for the client and see their likes and dislikes that way.... I was able to find out more colors they liked. However I'm not sure how accurate that is, I had my sim ask the usual questions and the sims said they like garden and patio décor but they were not listed under CAS.
  • Where do you find this career? I clicked on jobs on the phone and did no see interior decorator listed at all, and yes I have the pack.

I tried, you can't access your home inventory in build mode on another lot. You can totally put stuff in your household inventory (like if you delete a shelf with items on it, the items will go in your household inventory) but you can't see it till you get back home.
