While you can eat the Growfruit, it's not surprising its lack of effect. Its main purpose is for the Spring Growfruit Challenge (which may or may not be available this year.) If you give Jasmine Holiday 20 of them and at least one Perfect Growfruit you will unlock two new planters from the Build Mode catalogue. Otherwise, they're likely nothing special. Jasmine is the one obsessed with them. It does, however, have one other use. If it's in your refrigerator, it can still be applied randomly to a recipe that calls for "Any Fruit". I have about 100 Perfect Growfruit, but that's just me buiding up quality foodstores so I don't have to deal with it for a long while. I'm doing the same with ordinary plants too, like Tomatoes, Potatoes, Strawberries, etc. Strawberries and Carrots are especially important as they can be used to influence the gender of a baby durring pregnancy. Eating Strawberries and listening to the Pop station every day will increase the odds of girls, while Carrots and Alternative will increase the odds of boys. The food part of that trick as been around the Simsverse for some time (though I think it used to be Apples that made boys in older games). You'd need to eat at least 3 Strawberries or Carrots per trimester and listen to the proper music for at least 2 or 3 Sim hours for best effect.
