Its not so much a cheat as much as it is a way to control the eco-footprint. I have the some "cross your heart and hope to bali ha'i" from IL (the tiki torches) around my sims patio. they have an eco-footprint of industrial-3. Turn them on when the eco-footprint starts to het to close to going green, and turn them off when the eco-footprint gets too close to industrial. That way, it stays in the neutral zone. I'm having the same issues with the sun rays in my game as well, and I also don't use mods. I also change the default concrete that is under the roof which has an idustrial-1rating to a concrete that has an industrial-2 rating, to slow the rise towards eco-green. My method seems to be working rather well.
