I mean, EA let them make StrangerFail because Grant wanted it and they just cared about making a quick buck. Granted, they put in laptops and the military career to draw in people, so that could have been them trying to draw in people with safe things they know people would want.
Thank goodness they put the "safe stuff" because that was the only reason I bought it. The military career, a new world, decent amount of CAS/Build additions, and a new "negative" trait, paranoid, was worth $10 in my eyes, so I waited for Strangerville to go 50% off before buying.
The story was a cute gimmick, but I love the neighborhood of Strangerville more as it strongly reminds me of Strangetown in Sims 2 so much that I keep my aliens, mad scientists, and aloof rich politicians in Strangerville like I used to in Strangetown.
I thought at the time it was cute they gave us a tiny bit of something different all while still giving us many of traditional long-term features. Little did I know that they were going to take "guided gameplay" to the next level.
I think there are 3 stories to play out in JTB, which is waaaaaaay better than coming up with hundreds of stories where you decide what happens like Sims games of past...and even better?! Added Bonus! You can also visit Batuu any time after the story is over where there is little to do and even watch your neighbors in other worlds light-saber battle in the streets!
I am a little concerned for JTB's stories.
It seems like it's going to be structured like Strangerville. I was a bit excited about Strangerville because I was going all out for a setup to play this pack. I added Mulder and Scully and aliens in disguise who may have had something to do with what was going on in Strangerville.

I built a government lot to house my agents and the aliens that were taken into custody.

I also had two side characters that were in the Military and Science careers.

And I was enjoying it initially, but I became bored with the laundry list of tasks:
Talk to this person, get this key-card, get this suit, get this filter...

I think was getting more enjoyment out of making my sims and building my lot than I was the game play.
Also just playing the careers and having standard play with my sims.
I never finished Strangerville. I could tell where the story was going and I was feeling that when I finished, it probably be a long time before I played it out again, if ever. I do agree that I can use the town as a TS4 version of Strangetown.
Perhaps my problem was I was also using it to post a story and it was slowing my pace down.
I will try again someday, but I probably won't play my agents. I will use them as NPCs in Strangerville to add a little richness to what is already there. I hope The Journey To Batuu will have more fun game play, The Star Wars theme should help a lot because I am way more interested in it than Strangerville. Just looking at the game trailer, it seems tighter and more controlled. I don't think I will be building and adding characters to it. It will be interesting to find out how it plays.
