I asked the computer AI and found it started circa 1200 from Old English word, cringan which meant "yield, give way, or fall in battle, become bent." In the 1570s it was defined as "to bend or crouch, especially with servility or fear". Never would have thought the word was that old! The information was from a site, etymonline.com
