Funerals and traditions

In my main game I use the same traditions in all worlds. Families get to keep the urn at home for a couple years for mourning etc, then the urn/grave is moved to a graveyard where spirit gets released during the ceremony.

Now that I got Island Living, it feels naturally having a different tradition in this far away location. First I thought they might place the dead fellow on a small boat and push it out to the ocean. Perhaps they sacrificed dead family members to the volcano in the very long past, hehe. None of these can be done in gameplay, but I can always pretend :) However, I can't decide whether Sulani shall have a small graveyard or not. If they send dead sims out on a float, there will be no grave. For now they just have a rule that the gravestone or urn must rest for 2 years on the exact position where the sim died. But then what...?

Do you have traditions for this, and do they vary from world to world?
  • That's a really great idea on how to play! For your Sulani, what about if you made an area of the water contain floating urns? It could be a floating graveyard! I think the only kind of urns that don't float are occult and pets, but I may be wrong.

My personal tradition for the tombstones/urns is to have at least one family member go to a graveyard (I have only 1 and it's across from the Goth's as a generic lot) with the tombstone/urn in order to place it there. Sometimes I will invite over extended family and friends to have an informal get together to honor the deceased.

My graveyard has both an outdoor area and an indoor basement for tombstone/urn placement, where I try to keep family groups together. In the basement I have multiple rooms of urns, a podium with seats to give a speech, a dining room with a buffet table, and even a room with vampire coffins hidden by a secret bookcase door.

I like having the basement because it is an easy way to expand storage without disturbing the lot's appearance and you can make small rooms for different families. I was thinking of making a pet section, and it will be simple to carve out a new underground room when I do.

That's a lot of great ideas. I don't want the Sulani location to be anything massive, but doing it under ground should make that easier. The floating urns sounds fun with just a few urns, but I guess it will be difficult to add candles and flowers etc. So, I'll go for urns in a basement... just need to decide where. Perhaps under the Tangled Flat, which I plan turning into a small market of beach stores. It's a tiny lot, but urns can be stored on shelves I think, and - I'm not gonna have tons of them anyway. Then I can imagine they might have a nature ritual including either volcano or ocean, or something else, but that some is also kept in that mausoleum. Need to give it some more thinking. I can create the basement anyway.
