Gardeners, do you build greenhouses?

Whilst functionally worthwhile, the choice to use a greenhouse, outdoor garden, or "open-air greenhouse" most often comes down to necessity, either for the sims, or the simmer. Greenhouses are easier, but outdoors have a certain appeal (and more ways to style them). For me, the open-air greenhouse was necessary because the sim who most utilised it was a vampire with thin skin, who also loved being outdoors.

Does a "roofed" garden count as "outdoors"? In the game I mean.

Actually, a roofed garden has your sims plants sheltered. And I should know, I do it all the time in my game. ;)

Yep, a roof is all it takes for plants to be considered sheltered. Walls are not needed. I do glass roofs with just pillars sometimes.

I built a lot once called downward living that has a full garden in one basement, a gym in another, a science lab in the third and an underground swimming pool in the fourth basement. The lot also has two above ground floors I think. It's massive and sits on a 20x20 lot. It's appropriately called Downward Living and is in the gallery if you want to check it out. It's old now though so doesn't have the things from packs I've purchased since.

Oh and the total value of this 20x20 lot is $309,096!

That's interesting but I can't picture how it would make sense authentically in the game. With the pillars, it makes more sense though.

When I do that though, I like making it a transparent roof. Hence, a "greenhouse".

I think it would have to be a clear roof to feel like a greenhouse to me. In my above mentioned house, I never even once thought of that basement garden as a greenhouse. The same goes for windows. Floor to ceiling to allow every bit of possible light would be a must for me.

You still get weeds in a greenhouse, just not as often. Insects also can happen, though it is very rare.

Did some testing (mainly because I was curious, and had forgotten if it did or not).

For the plants? No. The garden works much the same as a normal greenhouse, protecting them from the elements. Same with sims.

For a sim with the "Loves the Outdoors" trait? Also no. It counts much the same as being in a room. I suppose I hadn't noticed due to my sim having crossed the outside to get to it so often that she never felt "stir crazy". In effect, all it served to do was give the illusion of being outdoors.

I'm on day three with eight full planters in my greenhouse and no weeds yet which I need for my aspiration since I didn't have enough plants that needed watering. It is winter though and only three days in.
