PART 3: Search and Rescue
Malcolm and Holly are walking through Nancy’s office.
Malcolm: Just tell me again what kind of file I’m supposed to be looking for.
Holly: It’s the only folder that might seem strangely out of place at first glance but in actuality that’s the point.
Malcolm: A file so important that anyone would think it’s just a simple folder but this way, my mom can keep a close eye on it.
Holly: You learn fast.
Malcolm: Do you have any idea of what’s in the file?
Holly takes out a flashlight and looks through a file cabinet.
Holly: I have a theory but that’s about it.
Malcolm: What’s your theory?
Holly: Honestly? It might be a file on my—Our¬¬ brother.
Malcolm: Like a criminal record?
Holly: Anything. Criminal records, parking tickets, even if he had a library card.
Malcolm looks around Nancy’s desk, stacks of papers litter the top. He checks the turns on the computer as it beeps to life. His eyes scan the computer screen and starts looking through folders.
Malcolm: Holly, what’s our brother’s name?
Holly: Johnny. Why?
Malcolm: I think I just found him.
Holly: What? Let me see.
Holly walks over and stands behind Malcolm. Her eyes widened as she continues to read the screen.
Holly: Look at all the files. Your mom’s been watching him.
Malcolm: She’s got over a hundred videos of him. Going to work, at the grocery store even his trip to Monte Vista.
Holly: Not just videos, but pictures of his graduation and with his friends. See how far these files go back.
Malcolm types away on the computer and a file pops up on the screen.
Malcolm: It goes all the way back to the 80’s.
Holly: So she’s been watching him since birth.
Malcolm: I can’t believe this. My mom has been keeping tabs on a brother I never knew about. How could she just sit at the dinner table and talk about her day at the office when she’s been lying to me my entire life?
Holly: I don’t know. You’re mother’s been a puppetmaster for a long time. She’s gotten good at her poker face.
Malcolm: Wait a minute, I think I found something else.
Holly: What?
Malcolm: It looks like an address.
Holly: Is that where he lives now?
Malcolm: I don’t know. Oasis Springs? That’s about a two hour drive from here.
Holly: Come let’s go.
Malcolm: Go where?
Holly: We’re going to go see him. Think a family reunion is long over due.
