Growing Together and the kid bikes

Hi!

I've been trying to teach a child sim how to ride a bike. Is this ridiculously buggy for anyone else or is it just bad luck or some mod that I use?

Adults absolutely refuse to help kids to learn... The kid asks, they get some relationship gain and then just... nothing! They go and do something else.

Huh, fine... just do it alone then. The kid starts practicing but if they leave and do something else (like use the bathroom of eat) the "progress" wheel for learning resets. Do we really need to teach the whole skill in one go with no breaks to get the nmilestone and the kid riding? Or is just something I'm doing wrong or a known mod conflict?

Thanks for any tips!

  • I find that it takes a ridiculously long time to learn how to ride a bike. You think they will have learned by filling the whole progress wheel in one go, but no! They don't. You still have to have them keep practicing endlessly. And it is very glitchy, especially if you are near a building - they will cycle vertically up and down platforms, steps, through walls, hedges etc.

If you want someone to teach them (slightly quicker result, in theory) I find it best to get both the adult and the child with the bike into an open space and then get the child to ask if they will help them. Even then, sometimes the adult will still just wander off to do something else.

And then all of a sudden, with no real indication of why, the child will suddenly be able to ride. I have no idea how many times you have to go around that progress wheel to get there but it feels like it's at least three. IRL we taught our kids how to ride a bike in less than two minutes - just hold the saddle and run with them and let go when you can no longer keep up - hey presto, they can ride a bike!

It's not just you! I have the same experience even when mods are out. I have had child sims go from zero athletic skill to max skill purely using their bike and still not learn to ride. I'm not sure if it's by design, but I agree that it's excessive.

I don't use mods and I have the same issue, "adult will still just wander off to do something else". I tend to skip that aspiration, or cheat the aspiration reward if I really want it. If it's a household with lots of sims you can also let the child learn on their own - it keeps them busy, at least. But it's not a satisfying story or animation.

  • Oh, thank goodness I'm not alone in this!  I was beginning to think Joe and Louise were just rotten parents. LOL They supplied a bike for their firstborn upon his aging up to Child. Will either of them take a moment or two to instruct him? No. He's a rather athletic kid, too, although he seems less inclined to even practice on his own. What the heck is going on?

It's Erik who's not so skilled in that department. I realized I hadn't supplied him with his own bike and fixed that right away. He is at least willing to practice, whereas his older brother, Aaron, wasn't as inclined. Go figure.  I have since moved their house to a much larger lot, so there's plenty of room for riding lessons to take place.  I do hope this cures the problem. I did have a kid learn on his very last day before aging to Teen, in another save. Hm . . .

  • Sometimes there can be some issues if there isn’t a lot of free space where they are. It is good for them to try learning to ride in a public area where there is plenty of space.

  • It's been a while since I tried, but I can not recall it was a problem. It took some time, sure, but not much more than I kind of expected.

Could it be faster if parent has some Parenting skill and the kid has some Motor skill?

I haven't noticed any bugs with mine, but yes it definitely does seem to take a long time.
