I love doing that and have a save dedicated to Sims 1-2 then one for just Sims 2 Strangetown stories that I made when Strangerville came out, because Strangetown was always my favorite.
I put in my own twists though and fill in whatever backstory doesn't satisfy me or has gaps. If there is a mystery like Skip Brokes death by drowning... I try to make a story around it. I will research the parents/ghosts in their memories ect and sometimes start with them or they will still be alive in my game to live out the story hinted at. It's fun.
Also since there were only so many face and skin presets they might be changed up a bit because once you start remaking them they all look too much alike if you don't.
