Help me understand Family Leave for work-at-home careers

I'm having trouble using Family Leave for the work-at-home careers and am trying to figure out if there's a bug going on or if I just don't understand the gameplay. I posted this on AHQ Game Issues yesterday hoping to shed some light but no responses yet.
Anyone here have an idea?

Let's say a sim works at 10am in a career that offers working from home. They are about to have a baby and I got the notification that they are eligible for family leave.
I can wake them up in the morning and have them "take family leave" on the phone. It confirms that they are on family leave for one day.
Then at 9am I get the usual popup with the options to go in to work, work from home, or take PTO. No family leave option on the popup.
If I close the popup, it behaves as if I selected "go to work". The career panel no longer says on family leave, it says Work in 59 minutes.
The "take family leave" option on the phone is now gone.
The sim tries to leave for work at 10am as usual. If I keep them home, they get the "missing work" alarm and call from boss, as if they are not on family leave at all.
If I choose PTO on the 9am popup instead, it deducts one vacation day, and the career panel says the sim is on vacation not on family leave.

Am I missing something?
Is there a bug? (I couldn't find an existing bug report)
Are work-from-home careers not supposed to get family leave because you can work from home as an alternative? (if so why display the notifications about being eligible for family leave)

It's happened with two households in two different save games recently for me.
I think those are the only two households with new babies and work-from-home careers I've played in quite a long time.

  • That sounds like a bug to me. If there isn't already a report about it on AHQ you should start one. If it turns out it's an intentional "feature", or if you are doing something wrong in the steps, Crinrict or one of the other helpers usually lets you know pretty quickly.

Edit - Sorry, I missed the part where you said you had already posted it. Hopefully you get a response soon. It definitely sounds like a bug though. Taking the "family leave" option should prevent the go to work trigger. They probably just forgot to include the "work from home" notification in that.

I don't have anyone pregnant right now, but I can try to mess around with it this weekend, and see if I get the same problem happening. Do you have a link for the AHQ post that you made?
  • I found your post. If I get the same thing happening, I'll add a me-too and whatever observations I've got. But I probably won't have time for testing until Saturday.

Just in case it matters, which work from home careers have you tried with?
  • Hi @mightysprite

I tested this out this morning with a brand new save with all my mods removed. I made a couple who both had careers with the "work from home" option (education and engineering). They were both able to successfully take family leave. With the woman I took family leave during the third trimester and after the birth. With the guy I only took family leave after the birth because I didn't catch him in time during the third trimester before it was too late to take it. On the days they took family leave, they were able to do so without the dialogue panel about working from home etc. popping up, and they were not marked as being late. (Also, they had twins! That's the first time that's ever happened to me).

    A couple notes:
    - I am one patch behind (I'm on version 1.103.315.1020).
    - I did have needs decay turned off with a cheat, to make testing easier and quicker. But I doubt this would have any effect.

    Conclusions
-If it's a bug, it's an extremely new one, which would have been introduced in the latest patch, since I am one patch behind.
-If you have mods, try testing without them in. It could be a mod issue.

Otherwise, unfortunately, I have no other ideas, because it worked properly for me.
  • Oh, thank you for testing @GlacierSnow ! I will also test it again.
When did you do the take family leave action? In the morning before the popup came?
  • @mightysprite Yes. I took it about 3 hours before their scheduled work start time. I think the popup actually happens about an hour before the start time, so I was taking the family leave option about 2 hours before that.
