Help! My sims are gone

I forgot about the update so I loaded my sims legacy to play and after loading into the game I realized my mods were on. I turned them off and exited the game and now when I load back in my family is no where to be found. The lot is empty and they are not in the household tab. Is there a way to get them back? I had so much progress I could cry.
