To me it seems random how long it takes for their grade to go up when joining them at school. Some seem to do it effortlessly, had one go from C to B just after a week, most take forever but they do eventually advance. If the sim is a really bad student they'll promptly drop a grade as soon as the progress bar hits its lower limit but there's no telling how long it'll take to advance when the bar is full, but they do eventually advance. I don't see doing homework and extra credit helping any so I've stopped bothering with that.
