There are two ways to make investments. The first is through the fabulously wealthy aspiration. If you accomplish it, your sim receives the shrewd trait which deposits 5% of the household funds into their account weekly. This trait was broken for a long time, but was fixed in a recent patch. In the investment branch of the business career, sims can also earn the ability to make investments. Those usually take about 48 hours or so I believe to make a return, but will only make a return once, and then you have to do another investment. I don't think these investments are guaranteed though to always work out in your favour.
