Usually just bake a cake and have the household gather together when the birthday Sim blows up the candles.
I rarely have a birthday party. If I have one I hardly ever do a prestige party, I don't like to be forced to do things while partying and I don't need the rewards.
After the birthday I go to CAS and change the clothes and hair if needed for the birthday Sim.
