Usually, I create a holiday with music and art spirit tradition to be-able to sing the happy birthday song to the birthday sim in simlish.
Sometimes I add more traditions on pending on the sim.
Next I plan the birthday party on the calendar for later that same day, making sure to know work hours of whom I want to come.
When I get the almost time for so-and-so's birthday, I make sure the parents know everyone they need to know to invite them over, (this is easier via clubs).
Then I bake a cake adding candles and have the party, I sometimes give gifts and sometimes the new clothing and room are the gift.
I tend to focus on that sim the whole day and do things they really like.
I recently went big doing a huge backyard and venue party for my two sims Hazel and Rainbow toddler-to-child birthdays.
I decorated the whole house/venue and let them open the gift pile because they turn to birthday presents when you have a party planned.
I also let them eat the cake and use the ice cream maker along side it.
I had a puppet show, void critter tournament, a group story and there was even a skating rink!
But those are rare!
