I also use this approach. Leveling up skills can be a bit grindy, so I always try to make it feel organic and part of the gameplay. Gardening is great anyway, because I like for my Sims to cook with perfect ingredients. Getting them into the habit of jogging is good, because that is the best way for them to keep their shape (which they can easily lose in my game due to the gourmet cooking skill) and chess also builds fun. I also like to have my Sim 'ponder moves' on the chess table before they garden to get the 'Focussed' modlet which helps building the gardening skill faster. But you can also place an element cube in your garden for that or examine a fossil, element etc before gardening.
