How do you play a save long term without corruption?

I tried to do a search and couldn't find a topic on this so I hope I am not breaking the rules posting this. Anyhow, I very rarely have a save that I play long term as I get bored easily. Lately though I hit upon a game which I am enjoying. I have played it for about a week so far real time, and last night the game wouldn't save said error code and gave a long number. So I tried to roll back to an earlier save, but that didn't work as I got the same error.

Here is the situation. I do have a couple of mods mc command center, ui cheats extension, and the national bank mod I have had these for a while and all are updated. I do have cc but have had it for a long time. Anyhow I have a female sim who used Don Lothario as a sperm donor, and she had five children. After they aged into toddlers, she got pregnant by alien abduction and had four babies. After Don's kids became children the four alien children became toddlers. My sim who gets abducted on a regular basis lol, came back again pregnant with 6 babies. I paused her pregnancy so I could age up Don's children into teens and move them out leaving the four current alien babies as children in the house. All is good so far. After the teens aged up, I moved them out, and then continued the pregnancy leaving the mother and the four children in the house. I saved a few times no problem after that. Then the babies were born and the next time I tried to save, I got the error code. That is when I tried to recover the save but didn't work.

I am so bummed as I was having fun. Luckily I saved Don's children to my library along with the four alien babies and my female sim who was pregnant at the time with the six alien babies into the library before the corruption occurred. So I am going to put all of them into a new save.

I know you shouldn't use save as for a long time, and to occasionally do a new save which I try to do, but is there anything else I can do in case when I start this new game it gets corrupted again? I should mention I do know about clearing caches and I did that before the game got corrupted.

These alien children are turning out so pretty in disguise and out of disguise. I want to see how these other six turn out, but no point if every time I play and they are born the game gets corrupted.

  • So far I have never had a game save corruption in Sims 4. But to be on the safe side I do periodically do a Save As, and usually, keep around 3 copies before deleting the older saves. I started doing this when I did have one sim who had gotten extremely wonky and ended up having to delete her. I think I might still have a copy of her in my library, but that one also has a vampire issue that just won't clear up.
  • I don't think it's corruption - I think it's due to exceeding the sim limit. You should head over to Deaderpool's discord for help, they may be able to get you back saving again. This game is really hard coded for 8 sims, even though MCCC lets you go over that - but it's well known to cause issues.

  • -When I save my game I use "save as" and rename file each time although it's the same game I've been playing since launch. I have a few of those saves lined up in case the file i'm about to play is corrupt which I don't think ever happened.

-I delete the localthumbcache after each game.

-From time to time I delete the spotlight file in cachestr.

-Recently after reading the threads about how long it takes for your game to load per lot, people mentioned something about that having loads of stuff in your gallery library may slow things up so I deleted a bunch of lots from my library.
  • It's kind of hard to like really corrupt a save in this game. Error codes are far more often mod-related than not. Yes, there have been and still are a few cases where they aren't related to mods but this is not typical. You can easily avoid corrupting your saves by having the proper knowledge regarding using and maintaining your mods.
  • remove mods and try again. Might not be the save problem but a mod one, cc too.

A week is not a long time play though :D I've had only one save since the beginning of the release of the game and I never even used save as.
Only recently started using that option.
  • I don’t use mods or CC, but I will use ‘Save As’ every month or so, and try to save my sims to the library every few months at least. I always have at least 3 or 4 saves for my main game that I have been playing since I began. I figure if I have a problem, I can go back to the next most current save. I play rotationally so I have a lot of people in my save.
  • Thank you all for all your great advice. I think I will try removing the mods and adding them back in. I know it could be mod related, but here is the thing, I have played families before with 20 sims in it, and never had issues with those saves, that is why I was thinking it could be game related, but I will also head to deaderpools discord to see what I can find on that.

    Thank you all.

  • Fwiw--I always clear out my caches after every gameplay session, & then delete the trash folder. I have a number of different save-file sets, most going back to 2014 or 2015. Current one I've been playing is one of the 2015 ones. It has a lot of bugs, but it's still playable.

eta: I rotate between 4 different 'save as' savefiles for each one of my interconnected-worlds (need better terms!). So for the Kozlov-Pettifogger-Rudenko-etc. set of households, I have 4 different saves & I save about every 20-30 minutes, one after the other & back again. I used to have a different save for every household, but that was because I was expecting TS3 file-structure. I cut down to 4 because there are 4-to-a-line in the save-menu-box-thingy.

Also, before every patch, I copy my entire 'save' folder from TS4 over to the EA folder (one level up from the TS4 folder). That way, if my files get corrupted, I don't have to go back to the very beginning. I only started doing this a year or so ago, though. I keep those pre-patch save folders, too, just in case. At the very least, they might be useful to QA if they want before-&-after savefiles. (QA does sometimes ask for savefiles when they can't reproduce a bug themselves.)
  • Everytime you add or remove mods from your game you need to delete your resource.cfg file from the mod folder and preferably also clear cache. Both will generate again when you open the game so there's nothing to worry about. I wouldn't recommend clearing the cache unnecessarily though since it will actually make your game slower because there's where thumbnails from families, Sims different mood portraits and such are stored and every time you delete it the game needs to generate it all over again.
