How much income should Robin earn before marriage

I have 2 sims that I eventually want to marry and have children. Lisa is at level 7 of her Doctor career and her last bill was 1270 or somewhere around that. She earns 135/hour or 1350/day. So she loses almost a whole day's worth of work when her bills come. And that is only going to get worse once I build a second floor and an indoor pool. Hopefully she will get promoted in the next 1 or 2 days that I play her.

But what I am mainly concerned about is how much income Robin should earn so that not much is lost compared to total pay when Robin and Lisa marry. Robin is in the writer career and pursuing the author branch of it. That is unless the Journalist branch will produce a higher weekly income for him(I plan to have him get married when he gets past level 5 in his writer career).

So here are my calculations:

Author branch:
Short Story Writer: 60/hour * 8 hours/day = 480/day, 480/day * 5 days = 2400/week
Novelist: 115/hour * 7 hours/day = 805/day, 805/day * 4 days = 3220/week
Fan Favorite: 202/hour * 5 hours/day = 1010/day, 1010/day * 4 days = 4040/week
Bestselling Author: 296/hour * 5 hours/day = 1480/day, 1480/day * 3 days = 4440/week
Creator of Worlds: 465/hour * 6 hours/day = 2790/day, 2790/day * 2 days = 5580/week

Journalist branch:
Page Two Journalist: 56/hour * 8 hours/day = 448/day, 448/day * 5 days = 2240/week
Front Page Writer: 83/hour * 7 hours/day = 581/day, 581/day * 5 days = 2905/week
Investigative Journalist: 145/hour * 7 hours/day = 1015/day, 1015/day * 4 days = 4060/week
Editor-in-Chief: 189/hour * 7 hours/day = 1323/day, 1323/day * 4 days = 5292/week
Scribe of History: 287/hour * 6 hours/day = 1722/day, 1722/day * 4 days = 6888/week

Okay so it seems that the Author branch is more profitable in the short term but the Journalist branch is more profitable in the long term. I guess he is going to be a journalist.

Anyway, I was wondering. How much income should he earn per week before he marries Lisa who as I said earlier hopefully will get promoted soon? I have auto aging off. Should I go ahead and let him get to max in his career before he marries Lisa or should he marry closer to when he chooses the branch to pursue?

  • you put a lot of work into this. I don't have any right answers for you because it depends how comfortably you want them to live. But, also, it's a game where money comes surprisingly easy. Especially with the bonus every promotion and your author will make a ton of money from publishing books.

I wouldn't stress about it too much!
  • WOW that is some detail there!!! I'm sorry but I can't answer your question.

You could get them engaged now, if they aren't already, and have long engagement. Have him sell the place he is currently at, along with the belongings. Keep what you don't want to have to replace or just sell it so the house just don't sit there empty. Then just dirt cheap with putting things into his new place.

Then have them both be working a little harder on their career goals skills and get a little ahead in the department but don't lesson the effort for the rest of goals. For example, the writer career is going to have you writing all kinds of books. So put emphasis on the writing skill, plus he'll be earning money from selling books. Then pick another skill that is profitable, like fishing or something, and sell what he collects or makes. You can even work for tips with some skills. I know once you get a high DJ skill, your sim starts bringing home a lot of money. The most my Sim made was 2500 in one night but averaged 1500 to 1800 a night. Have her do the same so together, they are both saving money for their wedding, honeymoon and the expense of upgrading her home for when he moves in.
  • This is not quite on topic, but close enough. I was told as a young bride that if you wait to have kids until you think you can afford them, you'll never have kids. I say, just go for it, when it 'feels' right to you. If all else fails, sell something.
  • In my experience, the work of Journalist is a total time-waster, especially when doing your daily tasks; you have to actually go out and meet several people a day, ask each one of them about their lives, then you have to go home and write either a positive/negative article about the Sims you interviewed and have to write it for about 3-4 Sims in order to even complete your daily work tasks. This cycle repeats every time you're waiting for the next workday. If you don't mind Robin being a workaholic and have no social life, by all means pursue it. However if you want him to have more free time (especially for Lisa) I say just stick to writing books and being an author. Just my two simoleons.
  • I'm joining in to say that I would have him publish some books in order to start accruing royalties. That will supplement his income depending on how prolific he is as a writer. Most of my writers have chosen the author track. I've let Maaike Haas become a journalist but as mentioned above, she does have to go out and interview people. Honestly, I only do that when I get around to it so that slows the promotions a bit.

I think journalism is fine if you want something different or if you have a sim living near a lot of people who walk by. The author track is easier though, especially if you want to primarily focus on the sims in your household.

Have him get engaged, write three books in the author track and then get married wherever he is in his career by then. That's probably what I would do.
  • I have one advice. The frugal trait. Get it. Its worth the points. Its the only trait ALL my Sims get eventually, despite I prefer to choose the traits that fits their personality, skills, hobbies, job, traits, etc. I guess all my Sims are scottish
