Curiously, that's around the age a kid will graduate primary school and go on to high school in the UK. The experience is very dramatic, but probably very different than it is across the Atlantic. A child who's 11 and in primary school, on top of the totem pole through age, is suddenly at the very bottom in High School, and faced with a host of new subjects. They also tend to emulate the teenagers around them, so talk about sex, smoking, drinking, drugs, all comes to the fore too.
