How to make children fun

Hey guys,

So I'm a Sims series veteran, and I still hard stand by The Sims 2 and I love The Sims 3 too, but I can't get into The Sims 4, no matter how much content is added. I thought about why this is for a little bit, and ultimately it comes down to one thing - The Sims 4 is entirely based around Young Adult play. It's a millennial simulator, as others have said. There's nothing fun about children in this game. But maybe I'm just playing them wrong?

In The Sims 2 they could essentially do anything a full grown sim could with only a few restrictions such as being able to cook or use certain items, and The Sims 3 is similar, with the exception that some skills were age restricted. With Generations in the mix, there was also a ton of child exclusive content.

On the other hand, the issue I've had with The Sims 4 is every child feels the same. They get the same 4 aspirations, which after doing once, are boring. They have one trait - again, boring. You have to build the same children skills to 10 over and over again to even unlock adult skills. Boring. Not only are children boring, but they stay as children way too long for how boring they are, on the default normal lifespan, and I get sick of them and want to age them up fairly quickly. Same with babies - in fact I don't think I've ever kept a baby as a baby for the full 3 days in The Sims 4, given even EA recognises how boring they are and you have the option to immediately age them up by clicking on them.

So, with that said, how do you make children (and babies) fun to play in The Sims 4? I need ideas, because this is the biggest barrier for me getting into the game. If mods are necessary, so be it. I do have Parenthood already, and it really doesn't increase my enjoyment of children very much. The projects and stuff are decent, but I just don't feel there's enough there.

  • Have you tried creating clubs for children centered around different activities? Or building lots that are ideal for children? One idea I have is to make a board game cafe with games like chess and Don't Wake the Llama, and then have the ice cream machine too. And then make clubs where that's their hangout area. I've yet to build it as I've gotten distracted with another challenge but it's still something I plan to do. But I think if you have GT, you could see how far that system can go to enhancing your gameplay, as well as using the Group sims action so Sims do things together. I think often with TS4 you have to think beyond what the game gives you, or rather look at what the game has given you, and try to figure out how multiple pieces can make the game run the way you want it to.

I'll give it a try. I wrote off Get Together as kind of pointless EP after trying it once, I'm not going to lie. It felt like a game pack, only with less content. I mainly used it to put family members in a club together for the skill/mood boosts back when I did play The Sims 4 LOL. But I haven't touched The Sims 4, nor Get Together, since Get Famous came out, so it might be worth trying. My sister has since bought Island Living, University, Vampires, and other packs I'd like to try since we share the game, but every time I load up Create-a-Sim, make my sim, and load a lot, I get cold feet, for reason stated in OP, as well as not being a huge fan of The Sims 4s aspiration and whim system.

This seems so obvious yet never occurred to me.

    • If you have Kids Room Stuff, kids can try to collect all 20 Voidcritter cards, level up their critters and do battle with other kids.
    • Create social groups with clubs. Give them a goal (like playing at the park together, fighting another gang of kids, trading and battling Voidcritters) or make after-school clubs (a swimming club that swims at the public pool, or a choir that sings at an old folks' home.)
    • If you have Seasons, they can join scouts and earn badges.
    • As Nat said, make lots that are great for kids. I have a rec center where sims of all ages can socialize, skill build and learn new things. I also have an old folks' home, so the kids can go there and keep the elders company.
    • Pick fights with other kids or their siblings. Get in on some rivalries that can last a lifetime.
    • If you have Realm of Magic, you can download a mod to let kids practice magic. It's a lot of fun.
    • Not part of the game itself, but you can go on Twitter or the Sims forums and continually ask the devs to add dragons into the game. Kids love dragons, obviously they would benefit from having one as a pet.
  • You could have an after school art club and make an arts center for children. Or a science club. Or a sports club which could include swimming, basketball, and skating (actually can children even skate I haven't tried it). Some sort of nature club where they collect things (again is that possible I haven't tried lol but if it is!!!) A music club - a club just for violin, a club just for piano. And you can have different clubs for different worlds so like there's the Swimming Club of Oasis Springs and all of those kids are really great because they live in the desert and spend half their lives swimming and the Swimming Club of Windenburg are like wholesome in their own way because they have the indoor pool in the city center because it rains half the year, or something like that.

Basically I guess just think about what children can do in their homes, and then figure out how you can introduce that to the entire world.
  • @NationalPokedex.
They can skate (both roller and ice varieties), and they can also go bowling.

My personal favourite activity with my current household's children is going on a collection spree. They can mine rocks and excavate dig piles, but they can't identify artifacts. Still, it's pretty cool.
  • I tend to bully kids to have some fun. There are many ways to do it. Many, many ways... >:)
