I really wish played Sims could have part time "NPC jobs"

1: I just think it'd be neat to be able to have a part time gig as a repair person or maid, and then maybe have a another full time job (if hours allowed) or freelance. It could work kinda like school and after school activities/jobs do for kids and teens.

2: Then we could set up specific sims we want to have those jobs (what I'd really like a "job manager" in CAS or manage households. There could even be a toggle in options to randomly assign needed jobs or do it manually. But that's another topic.) Then you could create your own repair person or librarian and set them loose in the world! You wouldn't NEED to, but I know a lot of players who would appreciate the option.

And 3 (this is the real reason I'm making this post): I really don't like it that NPCs with those jobs lose them if they become played! Sure, maybe I want them to quit that dead-end job, but that should be a choice. Right now one of my sims has struck up a romance with the cute local librarian, but I kinda don't want to move him in because then he'll lose his job as a librarian! And I like him as a librarian, it's adorable! But I also want to have him marry my sim and maybe make babies. I guess maybe maybe they don't have to move in? Is that an option? To be married and not moved in together? And they could just Be Married but live in different places and he could keep his librarian gig. That seems kinda dumb to do just to avoid losing the job though...

I'm aware there's maybe a cheat for this, but it looked kinda complicated. If someone had a full, easy to use mod that just made all the NPC jobs accessible to played sims tho, I'd be hella grateful.

I think this is a good idea, I've never thought about it.
I don't know about mods though, but I'm interested too.
  • Yes, yes, yes, to all of this. I might be letting my inner control freak show here, but I've put so many hours into creating and subsequently cheating my NPC sims in new saves before the game even has a chance to generate sims for the roles (usually relatives of other sims so they're less likely to be culled or have their relationships culled). It's satisfying seeing them around doing their jobs, but I'd LOVE an easier, quicker way of making my own NPCs (and not having them immediately lose their jobs upon becoming playable).

As for mods, there is Paulson's NPC Control (NPCC), which reduces the rate at which some NPCs generate and uses your own sims to fill those roles instead, while also adding a new menu to allow you to manually assign NPC jobs to sims (they still have to be unplayable though, and in the case of Strangerville NPCs, must either live in Strangerville or be homeless).

It does make the process a lot easier but has it's own issues, among them being that some positions (like bartender, gym trainer and unfortunately librarian) are location dependent and can be finicky because of this. For example, if you want a gym trainer to work at the gym at San Myshuno, you have to go their with a playable sim and bring the other sim with you and assign the job to them at that lot, and they will only work at that lot, with them losing their job if you bulldoze or replace it, or change the lot type. Also, a sim being assigned as a librarian (either randomly through gameplay or you doing it manually) will result in their traits being replaced with bookworm and neat and nothing else (even if two of their traits were already bookworm and neat), as librarians apparently must have both of these traits. Cheating the third trait is easy enough, if a bit annoying. For this reason, I tend to not have the mod active and only put it back in my game when I need it. Still, it is useful!
  • I also find with married couples who have lots of kids that it is easier if one doesn't work. If they both had parttiime jobs they could split responsibilities more easily and both be good parents but enjoy a work life out of the house too.
